Other Related Projects

2020-2022
Oral Historian, Biography Writer, Voice and Creative Director, Lead Audio Producer, Consulting Producer, Location Sound Recorder, and Interviewer for SFMOMA’s Proyecto Mission Murals

  • Proyecto Mission Murals examines the origins of the community mural movement in San Francisco’s Mission District over close to two decades, from 1972 to 1988. Created in collaboration with community partners Juana Alicia, Susan Cervantes, Lydia Chavez, Tim Drescher, John Jota Leaños, Fátima Ramírez, Josué Rojas, and Melissa San Miguel along with project editor Cary Cordova, the project includes documentation of murals created in the Mission District between 1972 and 1988, accompanied by reference images. It also features materials generously provided by the muralists themselves, the Mission community members and organizations that have supported their work, and scholars and journalists who have chronicled their activity, including oral histories, essays, a documentary film, an audio zine, primary sources, and new artist biographies. The interdisciplinary nature of Proyecto Mission Murals reflects the complexities and richness of the community mural movement. Rather than a cohesive or seamless narrative, this project conveys its wide-ranging aesthetics, the diversity of its participants, its changing nature, and the perpetual challenges faced by its artists.Proyecto Mission Murals examines the origins of the community mural movement in San Francisco’s Mission District over close to two decades, from 1972 to 1988. Creator and Facilitator, "Catharsis: An Inauguration Poetry Reading," a co-presentation by Poets Reading the News & on-off.site, San Francisco Bay Area, CA

  • Before we can imagine what will be, we must look at what is. Poets Reading the News and on-off.site presented "Catharsis: An Inauguration Poetry Reading" on Saturday, January 23rd at 11 am PST. We processed the enormity of the end of Donald Trump's presidency and the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris with poetry, guided exercises, and deep silence. There were readings by henry 7. reneau, jr, Gary Margolis, Hyun-Joo Kim, and Susana Praver-Pérez who centered us in this historic moment. There were exercises by Stephanie Garcés and Stephanie Smith which provided intention, reflection, and action. And there was facilitation by J Spagnolo, Elle Aviv Newton, and Camilo Garzón to keep participants present.

  • National Geographic, in partnership with Tribhuvan University and Rolex, was undertaking an expedition on Mount Everest, where an interdisciplinary team aimed to better understand the effects of climate change. I served as the National Geographic Society’s lead writer, content editor, and digital producer for the Perpetual Planet Extreme Expedition: Everest 2019 Open Explorer expedition journal. This multimedia journal and feature had a spotlight on National Geographic’s Life at the Extremes hub (i.e., natgeo.com/everest) presenting the 2019 historic expedition to Everest that a multidisciplinary team embarked on in order to better understand and mitigate the effects of climate change. 2017 - 2018
Digital Producer, National Geographic 130th Anniversary Timeline, Washington, D.C.

  • For its 130th anniversary, the National Geographic Society's digital production team – that I was a part of – created a timeline so that users could explore 130 years of discoveries, innovation, and above all: impact. On January 27th day, 1888, thirty-three founding members met at the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C., to create “a society for the increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge.”

2016
Chief of Dais Staff, Change the World Model United Nations (CWMUN) at the United Nations Headquarters (UN HQ), New York City, NY

  • I led the staff of two separate teams, i.e. Dais made up of 50 members and the Crisis Team which consisted of 5 members, for CWMUN NYC 2016, which was held entirely at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and which was the first Model UN in history to be held at the UN HQ as its setting. With my team we facilitated in the sharing of perceived problems, concerns, and ideas for the improvement of the educational programs of Associazione Diplomatici with its Staff and Board while developing partnerships with other organizations around the world to address Diplomatici’s needs, and expanding community awareness of delegates’ needs, fostering the communication and the partnership with Rotaract, MUN Inc. and other associations, to develop the collaboration between groups and countries.

2011
Presidente del Congreso Joven, Gimnasio La Montaña, Bogotá, Colombia

  • A project that is in pursuit of the involvement of students from all socio-economic levels in Colombia to have access to an educational experience of being senators for a few days so that they can see Colombian politics and the legislative power in a different way. This was its one focus, to avoid the disdain that the majority of the population has had regarding these institutions. Congreso Joven develops a critical sense about the legislative institutions and leads to the renewal of faith in them. The students can put themselves in the place of senators and create laws according to the Colombian Constitution and other laws and codes and contribute directly to Colombia’s needs. I started as a senator during the academic year 2007 - 2008; became Vice-President of the Congress and President of the Sixth Committee during the academic year 2009 - 2010; and I was the President of the Congress during the academic year 2010 - 2011.
